Projects > Saigon Children's Charity
Objective
The scholarship programme of Saigon Children's Charity (SCC) aims at raising the level of education of poor children so they will have a better life than their parents. By giving scholarships, Smart Tulip wants to prevent that students drop-out of school.
Scholarships of Saigon Children's Charity
SCC has its head office in Ho Chi Minh city. Their scholarship programme runs already since 1992 with approximately 3000 scholarship students in primary and secondary schools. At the beginning of the school year every child gets enough exercise books and pens for the first half year. Each month the family also gets 10 kg of rice. This is roughly equivalent to what a child could have earned had they not gone to school. It represents between 10% and 15% of a poor family's earnings. At Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, every student gets a school uniform and more exercise books and pens for the second half of the school year. For children in particularly difficult circumstances additional help may be provided, for example a bicycle.
Who gets support from Smart Tulip
As of the school year 2009/2010 Smart Tulip supports fifty students with a scholarship for secondary school. SCC selects together with the local governments the poorest families and visits the children who get a scholarship at least 2 times per year. The average income of the household of the students is € 35 per month. The children do not need to be clever to be chosen nor do they have to pass any test - they just need to be eager to learn.
